Trauma specific therapies
When we have experienced trauma it can feel as though the past won’t leave us alone. It can be scary and frustrating to feel that our feelings are ruled by events that happened a long time ago. Our relationships and behaviours get impacted. It is hard to live well in the present when the fear in our bodies won’t go away. Sometimes there are traumas in our lives that we don’t remember because as babies and very young children we are super alert to threat, storing sensory information about safety and threat especially in the relationships with those we rely on.
Often, within the lives of our families, there is unprocessed trauma, loss and grief, so that the emotions we feel are more than just our own.
Deep sadness, anxiety, anger, guilt and shame, numbness, overwhelm, a sense of feeling stuckness or emptiness. These feeling make sense when we understand our system’s response to trauma, loss and grief. Therapists know this, and work with you to gently support your feelings and your relationship to your memories.
Trauma and Attachment informed therapists work at the pace you need so that therapy is safe. Your relationship with your therapist will support your journey so think of it as a working relationship where your therapist is your guide with tools to support a journey living better no matter what has happened n our lives.
