Counselling and Talking Therapies
Talking therapies, also called psychological therapies, give you a safe and private space to talk with a trained professional about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. They can help you make sense of why you’re feeling a certain way and support you in finding healthier ways to cope with life’s challenges. Many people find it helpful simply to feel listened to and understood without judgment.
Therapy and counselling can support people through a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, stress, OCD, trauma, grief, relationship problems, major life changes, and the emotional impact of long-term physical health conditions. Whether someone is struggling with a specific issue or just feeling overwhelmed, talking therapies can help them feel more in control and less alone.
Talking therapies and counselling are not just about “venting” — they also focus on building practical skills and confidence. They can help people recognise unhelpful thought patterns, understand where difficult feelings may have come from, and learn new ways to manage emotions and challenges. Many approaches can provide useful tools to break negative cycles, build resilience, and live according to current values rather than fears or old stories.
Counseling and psychotherapy are both talking therapies, but they have different goals. Counselling may tend to be shorter-term and focus on helping you solve specific, present-day problems like grief or a job change. Psychotherapy is typically long-term and goes much deeper to explore past trauma, chronic mental health issues, and the root causes of your behavior.
